School Cafeteria Program
Jump-start your day by walking with your child to school! It’s a great way to help improve your child’s health and safety. Once you’ve arrived at school, make sure your child goes to the cafeteria for a healthy breakfast. Miami-Dade County Elementary Schools offer breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. Breakfast at Miami-Dade County Public Schools is free of charge to all students every day.
The National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs as administered by Dade County Public Schools provides free and reduced priced lunch meals for children unable to pay the full price. Application forms are sent to all homes with a letter to parents or guardians. To apply for free or reduced priced meals, parents of students not approved by direct certification must fill out the application and return it to the school. Click here to complete the form online.
A good lunch is a combination of foods that supply approximately 1/3 of the vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fat needed daily by the body. Students are encouraged to choose 5 for better health! Remember participating in the National School Lunch Program provides kids with the "fuel" they need to perform for the afternoon.
Today's school meals provide much more variety than before and follow the U.S. Dietary Guidelines. The National School Lunch Program provides students with the opportunity of selecting a minimum of 3 of the 5 offered food choices for their lunch meal. The idea of "3 is good, 4 is better, 5 is best" is promoted to assure greater variety and nutrient intake. Want to learn more about healthy eating habits and nutrition?
